Argentina’s Liga Profesional (Liga Profesional de Fútbol, run under the Argentine Football Association) is the top-tier competition in the Argentine club league system. Tournament regulations: in the 2025 season, 30 clubs compete across two separate tournaments - Apertura and Clausura. In each tournament, clubs are split into two 15-team zones and play a 16-match league phase (14 matches within the zone plus two interzonal fixtures, including a clásico and an additional interzonal match drawn by lot), after which the top eight in each zone qualify for the playoffs. The knockout stage includes a round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals played as single matches hosted by the higher-seeded team, with the final played at a neutral venue; ties go straight to penalties in the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals, while the final uses extra time and then penalties if required. Relegation rules: two teams are relegated to Primera Nacional - one via the three-season average-points table (promedios) and one via the annual aggregate table, with the annual-table relegation applied after excluding the club already relegated by promedios (so if the same club finishes last in both, the next-lowest club in the annual table is relegated). If teams are level on points in relegation-defining positions, tie-break play-off match(es) are used under AFA rules. For the annual aggregate table in non-relegation positions, ties are broken by goal difference, then goals scored, then results against the tied teams (reapplied among any subset still tied), then fair-play and, if needed, a draw.
