The Brazilian Cup (Copa do Brasil, founded in 1989) is Brazil’s national domestic cup competition organised by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) in a knockout format. Regulations: 92 clubs take part, with qualification determined via state competitions and national tournaments, and some teams entering at later rounds. The opening rounds are typically single-match ties, with draws decided by a penalty shoot-out, with no “away team advances” rule. From later rounds onward, ties are generally played over two legs (home and away), decided by aggregate score and, if level, by penalties. The winner qualifies for the following season’s Copa Libertadores and earns a place in the Supercopa do Brasil.
