

Ligue 1 (France) (Ligue 1, founded in 1932) - the top professional club division in France organised by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP). Regulations: 18 clubs take part, the season is usually played from August to May in a double round-robin, each team plays 34 matches, home and away against every opponent, with 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. Teams are ranked by points, then goal difference, head-to-head points, head-to-head goal difference, goals scored over the season, total wins, away wins, lower disciplinary points (yellow card - 1, red card - 3), then drawing of lots. At the end of the season the bottom two clubs are relegated to Ligue 2, the 16th-placed club plays a two-legged promotion-relegation play-off home and away against the winner of the Ligue 2 play-offs, the winner is decided on aggregate score and, if level, extra time and a penalty shoot-out are played in the second leg. UEFA club competition places are allocated via France’s position in the UEFA access list, typically: 1st-3rd - UEFA Champions League, 4th - UEFA Champions League qualifying, 5th - UEFA Europa League, the Coupe de France winner - UEFA Europa League, and the next league position - UEFA Conference League, with cup-related places passing down the league table if the cup winner has already qualified through the league.
