Regulations: 18 clubs take part, the season is usually played from August to May in a double round-robin, with each team playing 34 matches, home and away against every opponent. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. Teams are ranked by points, then goal difference, goals scored, the aggregate head-to-head record over the two matches, head-to-head away goals, total away goals, and if still level an additional play-off match is played at a neutral venue. At the end of the season the bottom two clubs are relegated to 2. Bundesliga, and the 16th-placed Bundesliga club plays a two-legged promotion-relegation play-off home and away against the 3rd-placed 2. Bundesliga club, with the winner decided on aggregate score and, if level, extra time and a penalty shoot-out.
