The German Cup (DFB-Pokal, founded in 1935 as the Tschammer-Pokal and reintroduced in 1952/53 under its current name) is Germany’s main domestic knockout cup competition. Regulations: 64 teams take part, including all clubs from the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga, the top four finishers from the 3. Liga, the regional association cup winners and additional qualifiers allocated to the associations with the highest number of men’s teams. The competition starts in the round of 64 and runs over six rounds to the final, with ties decided by draw, and amateur teams generally receiving home advantage in early rounds and in fixtures against licensed clubs. If level after 90 minutes, two 15-minute periods of extra time are played, and if still level the winner is decided by a penalty shootout. The winner earns a place in the German Super Cup and typically qualifies for the UEFA Europa League unless already qualified for a higher UEFA competition via the league.
