Regionalliga Bayern - a regional fourth-tier league in the German league system, administered in Bavaria under the Bavarian Football Association (BFV) within the German Football Association (DFB) framework. Regulations: the competition is played in a league format, typically with 18 teams in a double round-robin season home and away, with 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. If teams are level on points, BFV ranking criteria apply, starting with head-to-head results across the relevant fixtures, followed by overall goal difference and goals scored, then further defined criteria, and for three or more tied teams a separate mini-table of their mutual matches is used before reverting to overall season records if needed. The champion is eligible for promotion to the German 3rd division (3. Liga) under the DFB’s season-specific allocation for the five Regionalliga champions, which can include two-legged promotion play-offs, provided the club meets the 3. Liga licensing requirements. At the bottom end, relegation can include direct relegation places and relegation play-offs against the Bavarian fifth-tier champions or play-off qualifiers, played over two legs with extra time and penalties if still tied on aggregate. The league does not award direct qualification to UEFA club competitions.
