Liga de Expansión MX is Mexico’s second-tier professional club league under the Mexican Football Federation and the Liga MX and Expansión structure. Regulations: the season is split into two tournaments, Apertura and Clausura, with 15 clubs, the regular phase is a single round-robin across 15 matchdays with one match per opponent, awarding 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss, with ties on points broken by goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head, away goals, position in the coefficient table, fair play and then a draw. The top 8 qualify for the final phase, played over two legs in quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final, in quarter-finals and semi-finals the winner is decided by aggregate goals, then away goals, and if still level the higher regular-season seed advances, while the final uses extra time and penalties if still level after the second leg. There is currently no automatic promotion to the top division because promotion and relegation in Mexican football was suspended and has been stated to return from the 2026-27 season subject to admission requirements.
