Liga MX (Mexico) (founded in 1943) is the top level of professional club football in Mexico. Tournament regulations: 18 clubs compete and the season is split into two short tournaments - Apertura (roughly July-December) and Clausura (January-May). Each tournament has a 17-match regular phase played as a single round-robin, with home and away balance effectively spread across the two tournaments. Teams get 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss; level teams are separated by goal difference, goals scored, away goals scored, head-to-head record, position in the quotient table, fair play points and, if still tied, drawing of lots. Ten teams reach the end-of-tournament playoffs (Liguilla): places 1-6 qualify directly for the quarter-finals, while teams 7-10 play a single-match play-in for the final two quarter-final spots, with ties decided by a penalty shootout. Promotion and relegation are currently suspended, with the quotient table used for sporting and financial consequences, including fines for the lowest-ranked clubs.
