Primeira Liga (Portugal) (also known as Liga Portugal) - the top professional club division in Portugal, run by Liga Portugal. Regulations: 18 clubs take part, the season is played as a double round-robin with each team playing every opponent twice, home and away, with 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. If teams finish level on points, the tie-breakers are applied in order as points in head-to-head matches, head-to-head goal difference, overall goal difference, higher number of wins, higher number of goals scored. If teams are still level, two clubs play an additional match at a neutral venue with extra time and penalties if required, while three or more clubs play a single round-robin mini-league at a neutral venue and, if needed, the basic tie-breakers are applied again. At the end of the season the bottom two clubs are relegated to Liga Portugal 2, the top two clubs in Liga Portugal 2 are promoted, and the club immediately above the automatic relegation places plays a two-legged play-off against the best-placed club in Liga Portugal 2 below the automatic promotion places (excluding B teams), decided by aggregate goals with extra time in the second leg and penalties if necessary. UEFA competition places are allocated based on the final standings and Portugal’s UEFA access list for the relevant season, subject to club licensing requirements.
