Segunda Liga (Portugal) (Liga Portugal 2, unified national second tier since 1990) - the second level of professional club football in Portugal, organised by Liga Portugal. Regulations: 18 clubs play a double round-robin season, with each team playing 34 matches - home and away against every opponent. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. Teams are ranked by points, then by head-to-head points, head-to-head goal difference, overall goal difference, number of wins and goals scored. If clubs are still level, a neutral-venue play-off match is used for two teams, with extra time and penalties if required, while ties involving more than two teams are resolved via a single round-robin mini-tournament at a neutral venue followed by the same criteria. The top two clubs are promoted automatically to the Primeira Liga, and a third promotion place is decided by a two-legged play-off against the Primeira Liga team immediately above the relegation places, with extra time and penalties after the second leg if the aggregate score is level, while reserve teams are not eligible for promotion and the place passes to the next eligible club. The bottom two clubs are relegated to Liga 3, and the 16th-placed club plays a two-legged relegation play-off against the third-placed club from Liga 3, with extra time and penalties after the second leg if the aggregate score is level.
