

Segunda (Spain) (Segunda División, founded in 1929) - the second tier of professional club football in Spain, staged under LaLiga and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Regulations: 22 clubs take part in a double round-robin regular season, each team plays 42 matches home and away, with 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss, and if teams finish level on points positions are decided by head-to-head goal difference, then overall goal difference, goals scored, fair-play criteria and, if still required, an additional match at a neutral venue. At the end of the season the teams in 1st and 2nd are promoted directly to the Primera División, the teams finishing 3rd to 6th contest the third promotion place via two-legged play-offs with 3rd vs 6th and 4th vs 5th and the higher-placed team hosting the second leg, if the aggregate score is level extra time is played in the second leg and if still level the higher-placed regular-season team advances, the teams finishing 19th to 22nd are relegated to Primera Federación, and reserve teams are not eligible for the promotion play-offs with their place passed to the next eligible club.
