African Nations Championship (CHAN) - an official national-team competition under CAF, restricted to players active in their country’s domestic leagues. Regulations: the competition is staged every other year and consists of a qualifying phase and a final tournament, qualifying is organised across CAF zones and the organiser defines the format and the number of qualification places, in qualifying knockout rounds ties are played home and away, the winner is decided on aggregate score, then on away goals, and if still level the tie is decided by a penalty shoot-out. The final tournament is played under CAF’s approved scheme with a group stage, in the latest published edition 19 teams are drawn into four groups, the top two in each group advance to the quarter-finals, and quarter-final pairings follow the principle of a group winner facing a runner-up from another group. In the group stage teams receive 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss, if teams are level on points the ranking is determined by the head-to-head result first, then overall goal difference in the group, then goals scored, followed by fair play points and drawing of lots, and if more than two teams are tied the criteria are applied to the subset of matches between the tied teams, with the process repeated if needed for any remaining tied subset.
