FIFA Confederations Cup (formerly the King Fahd Cup, founded in 1992, run by FIFA since 1997) - an international national-team football tournament organised by FIFA and, in 2001-2017, typically staged in the next FIFA World Cup host country as a test event. Regulations: the classic line-up featured 8 teams - the reigning world champions, the host nation and the winners of the six continental championships, drawn into 2 groups of 4 for a single round-robin, with 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss, the top two in each group advancing to the semi-finals, followed by a one-off third-place match and final, with group ties broken by points, goal difference and goals scored, then head-to-head criteria, then fair play points based on cards and finally drawing of lots, and in the knockouts extra time and, if required, a penalty shoot-out were used to determine a winner. After the 2017 edition the tournament has not been staged, with its former calendar slot used for a revamped FIFA Club World Cup.
