Regulations: the 10 CONMEBOL member teams take part, the competition is typically played with a group stage in two groups of five on a round-robin basis, the top two from each group advance to a final stage that is commonly a four-team round-robin, and the top two in the final stage qualify for the Olympics. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat, and if teams are level on points rankings are decided first by head-to-head criteria, then by overall goal difference and overall goals scored, followed by disciplinary records and drawing of lots.
