Copa América (South America) (Copa América, founded in 1916) - the main continental tournament for South American national teams under CONMEBOL. Regulations: the competition is held every four years, under the current regulations 16 teams take part (10 CONMEBOL members and 6 invited teams), it is played in two phases - a group stage and a knockout stage (quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-place match and final), with all phases played as single-match ties. In the group stage the teams are split into 4 groups of 4 and play a single round-robin, points are awarded as 3 for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss, and if teams are level on points the tie-breakers are applied in order as overall goal difference in the group, goals scored, head-to-head criteria among the tied teams (points, goal difference, goals scored), then fewest red cards, fewest yellow cards and finally a random draw. The top two teams from each group qualify for the knockout stage, the quarter-final pairings follow the scheme 1st in Group A - 2nd in Group B, 1st in Group B - 2nd in Group A, 1st in Group C - 2nd in Group D, 1st in Group D - 2nd in Group C, if scores are level after 90 minutes in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the third-place match the winner is decided by a penalty shootout, and in the final extra time of two 15-minute halves is played before penalties if required.
