European Championship (UEFA) (UEFA European Championship) - the main national team competition for UEFA member associations, staged every four years. Regulations: the final tournament features 24 teams and consists of a group stage followed by a knockout phase, in the group stage teams play a single round-robin within their groups with 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a defeat, and the round of 16 is reached by the group winners, the group runners-up and the four best third-placed teams. If teams are level on points in a group, positions are decided by head-to-head criteria (points, goal difference, goals scored), with those criteria reapplied among any remaining tied teams if required, then by overall goal difference, overall goals scored, disciplinary points and then by position in the overall European Qualifiers rankings, with lots drawn if needed, and if two teams with the same number of points and the same number of goals scored and conceded play each other in their final group match and remain level after that match, their rankings are determined by a penalty shoot-out after normal time provided no other team in the group finishes level on points. The four best third-placed teams are ranked by points, goal difference, goals scored, number of wins, disciplinary points and then by overall European Qualifiers ranking, with lots drawn if required. The knockout phase is single-elimination (round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, final), and if a match is level after normal time, two 15-minute periods of extra time are played followed by a penalty shoot-out if still level.
