

Pan American Games (football) - the football competition of the Pan American Games, contested by national teams within the continental multi-sport event organised under Panam Sports. Regulations: in current practice the final tournament typically features 8 teams and is played as a group stage (2 groups of 4, round-robin) followed by a knockout stage with semi-finals, a third-place match and a final, with 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss, and group ties broken by goal difference and goals scored, then head-to-head criteria and drawing of lots, while in knockout matches extra time and, if required, a penalty shoot-out are used to decide the winner. The men’s tournament is typically age-restricted as an under-23 competition with up to three over-age players permitted, while the women’s tournament is played with no age restrictions.
