UEFA Super Cup is an annual match between the winners of the previous season’s Champions League and Europa League. The competition was introduced in the early 1970s as a meeting between the European Cup winners and the Cup Winners’ Cup holders and later evolved into the current format with the Champions League and Europa League winners. The trophy is decided in a single match at a neutral venue designated in advance. If the score is level after regular time, extra time is played and, if needed, a penalty shoot-out determines the winner. The match traditionally marks the start of the new European club season.
