European Under-21 Championship (Euro U21, UEFA European Under-21 Championship) - a European national-team competition organised by UEFA and staged every two years. Regulations: the competition consists of a qualifying competition and a final tournament, qualifying is played in groups on a home-and-away league basis with 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a defeat, group winners qualify directly for the final tournament and some finalists are decided via two-legged play-offs. In the play-offs the winner is decided on aggregate goals over the two legs, if still level extra time is played at the end of the second leg and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out decides who qualifies. The final tournament is played as a group stage followed by a knockout stage, in each group teams play each other once, the group winners and runners-up advance to single-leg quarter-finals, then single-leg semi-finals and a single-match final. If teams are level on points in the final tournament group stage, rankings are determined by head-to-head points, then head-to-head goal difference, then head-to-head goals scored, with the head-to-head criteria reapplied to any remaining tied teams if needed, then overall goal difference, overall goals scored, disciplinary points and the UEFA coefficient ranking. In final tournament knockout matches, if the score is level after normal time, extra time is played and, if still level, the winner is decided by a penalty shoot-out. Player eligibility is defined by the birth-date limit set for the relevant competition cycle.
