World Cup (FIFA) - the main international national-team tournament organised by FIFA since 1930, with a qualifying cycle through which teams reach the final tournament. Regulations: 48 teams take part in the final tournament, they are drawn into 12 groups of 4 teams, in the group stage each team plays 3 matches, 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss, the knockout stage is reached by the teams finishing 1st-2nd in each group, as well as the 8 best teams from 3rd place, then the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, the third-place match and the final are played. If teams are level on points in a group, positions are determined by criteria applied in order: head-to-head points among the tied teams, head-to-head goal difference, head-to-head goals scored, if necessary these criteria are re-applied only to matches among the teams that remain tied, then overall goal difference in all group matches, overall goals scored in all group matches, the disciplinary ranking based on yellow and red cards, then FIFA national-team ranking positions. To determine the 8 best teams from 3rd place, the criteria are points, goal difference, goals scored, disciplinary ranking, then FIFA ranking positions. In the knockout matches, if level after normal time, extra time of 2 periods of 15 minutes is played, and if still level the winner is decided by a penalty shoot-out.
