

World Cup Qualifiers - South America (CONMEBOL) - the South American national-team qualification competition for places in the FIFA World Cup final tournament. Regulations: 10 teams take part, the competition is played as a single league in a double round-robin, with each team playing every other team home and away, for a total of 18 matches. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. Teams are ranked by points, if level on points the tie-breakers are applied in order as overall goal difference, overall goals scored, head-to-head points among the tied teams, head-to-head goal difference, head-to-head goals scored, head-to-head away goals, then the disciplinary criterion based on yellow and red cards, then drawing of lots. At the end of the competition, teams finishing 1st-6th qualify directly for the FIFA World Cup final tournament, the 7th-placed team advances to the FIFA inter-confederation play-offs, and teams finishing 8th-10th are eliminated.
