Serie A is the top division of Italian football, founded in 1898 and converted to a league format in 1929. The competition is renowned for its tactical sophistication and was the birthplace of the "catenaccio" tactic.

Juventus is the most successful club in Serie A, having won the title 36 times. The team dominated Italian football, especially from 2011 to 2020, winning 9 titles in a row. Milan are second in terms of league titles with 18 victories, while Inter have also won 19 titles, most recently in the 2020/2021 season.

Serie A is known for its outstanding goalscorers. The record for most goals scored in a Serie A career is held by Silvio Piola, who scored 274 goals between 1929 and 1954. However, the most prolific season was 1928/29, when Antonio Valentín Ángel Scivera scored 36 goals for Torino. In more modern times, Gonzalo Higuaín matched that feat with 36 goals for Napoli in 2015/16.

Among the current crop of players, Cristiano Ronaldo stands out as the league’s top scorer in 2020/21, scoring 29 goals for Juventus. This highlights the high level of competition and talent that Serie A has to offer.

Serie A is also renowned for its goalkeepers. Gianluigi Buffon, who spent most of his career at Juventus, holds the record for most clean sheets in a single season, going 21 games without conceding in 2011/12. He also holds the record for the most clean sheets in Serie A, with 304.

Serie A clubs are also known for their fierce derbies, such as the Milan derby between Inter Milan and Milan and the Rome derby between Lazio and Roma. These matches not only showcase deep historical rivalries, but also often determine the league table.

Serie A has become more open and competitive in recent years, with Atalanta Bergamo, for example, becoming known for their attacking strategy, regularly finishing high in the table and participating in the Champions League.

On the international stage, Serie A clubs continue to confirm their reputation by regularly achieving success in European competitions, highlighting the high level of Italian club football.
