The Croatian Football League, known as the Hrvatska nogometna liga (HNL), is the top division of professional football in Croatia. The league was founded in 1991 after Croatia gained independence. The HNL consists of 10 teams, each of which plays 36 matches per season: two at home and two away against each opponent. The season begins in July or August and ends in May, with a two-month break between December and February.

The league regulations stipulate that the team that finishes first becomes the champion of Croatia and gains the right to participate in the UEFA Champions League. The teams that finish second and third are promoted to the UEFA Conference League. The team that finishes last is relegated to the Second League, giving its place to the winner of that league.

The history of the league is rich in significant events and successes of Croatian clubs on the international arena. Dinamo Zagreb is the most decorated club in the history of the HNL, having won the championship more than 20 times. Other successful clubs include Hajduk Split, which also has numerous national titles and has played in various European tournaments.

Interesting facts:

• Dinamo Zagreb has won the Croatian championship 28 times, including four Yugoslav titles.
• Hajduk Split has won 15 Croatian championships, including nine Yugoslav titles.
• The average attendance at HNL matches is around 3,000 spectators, highlighting the popularity of football in the country.
• In the 2023/24 season, Gorica, Istra 1961 and Varazdin will participate in the top division, adding variety and competition to the league.
