Play-off bracket
The UEFA Champions League is the largest and most prestigious club competition in Europe, featuring the best teams on the continent. The tournament has been held annually since 1955, attracting millions of fans thanks to the high level of play and the participation of elite clubs.
From the 2024/2025 season, the UEFA Champions League will switch to a new format, which was designed to increase the number of matches and enhance the entertainment value of the tournament. The new format includes 36 teams instead of the previous 32 and the abandonment of the traditional group stage in favor of the so-called “Swiss system”. This system assumes that each team will play 8 matches against different opponents selected by lot.
The teams will be divided into four groups based on seeding level, and each club will play four matches at home and four away. Based on the results of these 8 matches, the teams will be ranked in the overall table. The top eight teams automatically advance to the Round of 16, while the teams ranked 9th to 24th play an additional playoff round for the right to advance to the Round of 16. This innovation is intended to increase the number of top matches and provide fans with more high-quality football in the early stages of the tournament.
The playoff stage, starting from the Round of 16, remains traditional: teams will play two matches (home and away) in a knockout mode. The winners of these pairs will advance to the quarter-finals, semi-finals and, finally, the final, which will be held at a neutral stadium and determine the Champions League champion.
The Champions League is known for its record-breakers. Real Madrid holds the record for the most victories in the tournament - 14 titles. Milan, Bayern and Barcelona have also achieved significant success. The tournament often becomes an arena for the individual skills of players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who have repeatedly become top scorers.
The financial side of the Champions League also plays an important role. Winning the tournament brings clubs significant prize money and increases their commercial attractiveness. Sponsorship contracts and television rights to broadcast matches bring in billions of euros, which contributes to the development of clubs and football as a whole.
The tournament also serves as an important platform for the development of young talent. Many players begin their careers in the Champions League, demonstrating their abilities on the international stage. Clubs are eager to show their best, knowing that success in the Champions League increases their status and attracts the attention of the world football community.
The introduction of the new format from the 2024/2025 season is aimed at increasing the competitiveness of the tournament and improving the entertainment of the matches. More matches between the strongest teams in Europe in the early stages of the tournament promises to make the Champions League even more exciting and unpredictable.
In conclusion, the UEFA Champions League remains a key event in the global football calendar, bringing together the best players and teams. The new format of the tournament from the 2024/2025 season is designed to make the competition even more intriguing and exciting, giving fans the opportunity to enjoy more quality football.
