The Argentina Super League, known as the Liga Profesional de Fútbol (LPF), is the top division of the Argentine Football League and one of the most prestigious domestic football tournaments in South America. The tournament, which dates back to 1891, is one of the oldest in the world, although it has existed under its current name and format since 2017, when reforms in Argentine football took place.
The Super League consists of 28 teams, each of which plays one match against every opponent. Unlike most European leagues, Argentina does not have a single-season relegation system. Instead, a coefficient system is used that takes into account the results of teams over the past three seasons, with the weakest clubs being relegated to the Primera Nacional.
The Argentine Super League is known for its intense and emotional matches, especially between the country's top clubs. The most famous derby, the Superclásico, is played between Boca Juniors and River Plate, two clubs that have dominated Argentine football for decades. These matches regularly attract fans not only in Argentina but also around the world.
It is interesting to note that the Super League regularly produces new talents that then go to Europe and become stars of world football. Examples include Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero, who began their careers in Argentine clubs.
Statistically, the most decorated teams in the history of Argentine football are River Plate and Boca Juniors. River Plate have won a record 37 Argentine championships, while Boca Juniors have won 34. One of the most successful seasons was 2018/2019, when Racing Avellaneda won the championship with 57 points, one of the highest totals in the history of the tournament.
Also worth mentioning are the outstanding scorers, such as José Sanfilippo, who became the championship’s top scorer five times in a row from 1958 to 1962. His record remains unbroken to this day, and he symbolizes the consistency and skill needed to succeed in this tournament.
