The Spanish Segunda Division, also known as LaLiga SmartBank, is the second-strongest professional football league in Spain. Founded in 1929, Segunda plays a vital role in the structure of Spanish football, giving teams the opportunity to compete for promotion to La Liga, the top division of Spanish football.
The 2023/2024 season included 22 teams, each of which played a “two-round robin” system. This means that each team plays every other team twice - home and away, which is 42 rounds. At the end of the season, the teams finishing first and second are automatically promoted to La Liga. The teams finishing third to sixth participate in the playoffs for the third promotion spot. The playoffs consist of semi-finals and a final, each played over two legs (home and away).
The bottom four teams are relegated to the Primera Federación (the third-tier league in Spanish football). This format ensures a high level of competition at all stages of the season, as teams strive to either gain promotion or avoid relegation.
At the end of the 2023/2024 season, Leganes and Real Valladolid finished in the top two spots and earned direct promotion to La Liga. Leganes won the title with 74 points, while Real Valladolid finished second with 72 points. The promotion playoffs included Eibar, Espanyol, Sporting Gijon and Real Oviedo.
The teams relegated at the end of the 2023/2024 season include Andorra, Alcorcon, Villarreal B and Amorebieta. These teams have been relegated to Primera Fédéración, losing their places in Segunda to teams that have been promoted from the lower division.
Segunda regulations include 42 rounds of play in a “two-round robin” format. The teams that finish in the first two places are directly promoted to La Liga, while the teams that finish in third to sixth place participate in the playoffs. Relegation from Segunda threatens the last four teams, who are replaced by the best teams from Primera Fédéración.
