The Spanish Super Cup, also known as the Supercopa de España, is an important annual tournament that features the winners of the previous season's La Liga and Copa del Rey. The tournament has recently been expanded to four teams, including the finalists of these competitions, adding an extra level of competition and entertainment.
The 2023/2024 season was particularly interesting due to the intense competition for the trophy. The semi-finals featured Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, as well as Barcelona and Osasuna. The matches were played on 10 and 11 January 2024. Real Madrid beat Atlético 5-3, while Barcelona beat Osasuna 2-0.
The final match took place on 14 January 2024 at the King Saud University Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In this match, Real Madrid won a convincing 4-1 victory over Barcelona. Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo played a key role in this victory, scoring twice each. The only goal of Barcelona was scored by Robert Lewandowski.
The Supercopa de España regulations provide for the participation of four teams: the winners of La Liga and the Spanish Cup, as well as their finalists. The tournament is held according to the knockout system, starting with the semi-finals, and then the final. In the event of a draw at the end of regular time, extra time is appointed, and if necessary, a penalty shootout is played to determine the winner.
The Supercopa de España was first held in 1982 and has since become an integral part of the Spanish football calendar. Initially, the tournament was held between two teams - the winner of La Liga and the winner of the Spanish Cup, but from the 2019/2020 season, the format was changed to the current one, which includes four teams.
Over the years, Barcelona and Real Madrid have dominated the tournament, often meeting in the final matches. These games always attract a lot of attention from fans and become one of the most anticipated events of the season.
