The Portuguese Second League, known as Liga Portugal 2, is the second tier of the Portuguese football league system. Founded in 1990, the league has become an important element in the development of younger generations of footballers, providing a platform for them to showcase their skills and gain promotion to the top division, the Primeira Liga.

Competition Regulations

The Liga Portugal 2 consists of 18 teams, each of which plays 34 matches per season, one home and one away against each opponent. The season starts in August and ends in May. The top two teams at the end of the season are promoted directly to the Primeira Liga. The third-placed team plays a play-off against one of the bottom-placed teams in the Primeira Liga for the right to be promoted. At the same time, the bottom three teams of Liga Portugal 2 are relegated to the third division, Liga 3.

Interesting facts

1. Youth development: Liga Portugal 2 has traditionally been a platform for the development of youth teams, such as Benfica B and Porto B. These teams cannot advance to the Primeira Liga, but their participation helps prepare young players for the main squads.
2. Historical clubs: The league includes clubs with a rich history, such as Marítimo, Paços de Ferreira and Nacional, who have previously played in the Primeira Liga and achieved significant success on the domestic stage.
3. Competitiveness: The league is known for its high competitiveness, which makes it attractive to fans. In the 2023/2024 season, Santa Clara and Nacional were the teams that gained direct promotion to the Primeira Liga, having shown strong performances throughout the season. 4. Atmosphere at matches: Despite being in the second division, many stadiums in the Liga Portugal 2 boast a great atmosphere. For example, the União de Leiria stadium has a capacity of almost 24,000 spectators, creating a strong support for the local team.
